How court case can affect workers’ union dues

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments Monday in an Illinois case challenging compulsory union dues (Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees). Mark Janus, a state employee, is challenging the system used in 23 states that requires employees to pay agency or “fair share” fees in lieu of union dues even if they decide to leave the union. Janus argues that the First Amendment prohibits the state from compelling individuals to financially support the union’s speech on their behalf.
