WMU Files Answer to Music Professor’s Free Speech Complaint
On June 5, 2023, defendants in Mattson v. Guyette — four officials at Western Michigan University (WMU) — filed an answer to CIR’s complaint on behalf of former adjunct music professor, Daniel Mattson. CIR’s complaint alleges that WMU removed Mattson from his position after LGBT activists protested a book that he wrote several years earlier describing his Catholic faith and religious views on sexuality. Removing Mattson solely for expressing his religious views is a form of religious discrimination and violates his right to free speech. The case will move forward into the discovery phase.
